How Does PRP Therapy Fight Wrinkles?
It’s an unfortunate fact that most people develop wrinkles as they age. Wrinkles are most commonly found on the face, particularly around the eyes, nose, mouth, and forehead. They’re not very attractive and can make you look older, or even much older.
At Laguna Beach Aesthetics, Dr. O’Connell provides the latest technique in the fight against wrinkles: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This treatment is provided as a brief outpatient procedure in our office. It harnesses the natural healing powers of your body to stimulate collagen production, erasing your lines and wrinkles.
What causes wrinkles?
The natural aging process most commonly causes wrinkles. As you get older, your body’s production of collagen gradually slows down. Collagen is the elastic layer in your skin that keeps it plump and firm, and when you have less of it, your skin sags, forming lines and wrinkles.
Several environmental factors can also cause wrinkles, such as exposure to the sun and pollution. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet, and failure to properly moisturize your skin, can also speed the development of wrinkles. Heredity also plays a role in determining when and where wrinkles develop.
Wrinkle treatments
A number of treatments are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or remove them altogether. These include:
- Botox® injections
- Dermabrasion
- Chemical peels
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
- Laser resurfacing
- Plastic surgery
- Dermal fillers
Each of these treatment options has advantages and disadvantages, but there’s one that’s right for you. Our team takes the time to get to know you and your aesthetic goals, so we can find the best treatments to achieve them.
What is plasma?
Plasma is the largest component of your blood and has the essential job of carrying nutrients, proteins, and hormones to where your body needs them and removing waste from your cells. Suspended in the plasma are tiny cells called platelets.
What are platelets?
Platelets are small cells that are responsible for clotting your blood when you’re bleeding from an injury. They circulate in your bloodstream, always at the ready to travel to the site of damage. They trigger your body’s healing mechanisms, allowing for the regeneration of your tissues.
What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is plasma that’s been highly concentrated with platelets. Dr. O’Connell takes a blood sample and uses a centrifuge to separate its components. She then takes the platelets, concentrates them, and injects them back into your body.
How does PRP erase wrinkles?
Platelets are your body’s healing agents that travel to areas of injury to jump-start the repair of your tissues. When PRP is injected into your body, it immediately begins releasing growth factors, substances that help heal and repair your skin. This initiates collagen production, a protein in your skin that keeps it firm and elastic.
This rapid arrival of collagen plumps up your skin, filling in the wrinkles and lines wherever PRP has been injected. This process begins immediately and continues for several weeks after your treatment. Your wrinkles and lines disappear, and your skin looks smoother, fuller, and more radiant.
Although wrinkles are an inevitable part of aging, you don’t have to accept your wrinkles and lines. Platelet-rich plasma therapy is an easy, effective treatment that removes your wrinkles and restores your smooth, gorgeous skin.
